Think Safe, Work Safe, Home Safe
We were asked by EGIP to organise a Safety Stand Down Day at one of their depots to improve on their own Event last year. The Event would consist of operatives and managers across a number of organisations operating on the contract. We were told to plan for 300 delegates to attend an interactive session with a motivational speaker. We would receive support from a small group of EGIP staff to help coordinate aspects of the Safety Stand Down Day.
The Event was to take place in a matter of 6 weeks from our initial engagement – which was a very tight timeline to organise such an Event. We quickly made a joint visit to the proposed venue (at one of the depots) to view the facilities available and immediately expressed concerns. It was quickly agreed that the venue was not suitable and a more appropriate venue was required to demonstrate the level of importance such a day warrants.
After a quick brainstorming session with the key individuals who were going to support Alleviate Consulting Limited we came up with a structure for the day. An Event Plan was developed so everyone involved understood actions required to ensure we covered all aspects of the day itself. We also challenged the original date.
We visited a number of potential venues which were available and suitable to accommodate our specific brief and the 300 delegates. We settled on Hampden Park for the accommodation and logistical challenges that other venuespres ented. We also agreed a new date which gave us more time to plan.
Safety demands that you create an Event which demonstrates its importance, and time is essential to plan such an Event correctly with the importance it requires. A motivational speaker was sourced and Dramanon (a drama based learning group) were provided with two clear Health & Safety issues to re-enact in two separate breakout sessions.
The day was to commence after tea & coffee with an introduction to the day, followed by the motivational speaker addressing all 300 delegates. Seven breakout sessions then took place with delegates splitting into 7 groups of approximately 40 people covering some key subjects of the day. The 7 subjects being: two sessions by Dramanon, Occupational Health, Legal Issues, Plant Demonstrations, Behaviours and PPE. Each session reflected the ongoing challenges of the project to the workforce and to reduce the communication gap between the workforce and management.
Marshals were appointed to facilitate the movement of the 300 delegates around the venue. The logistics proved a huge challenge and were overcome with great planning. Awards were also given out at the end of the day. We wanted to create a day that lasted in the memory and was not forgotten on the drive home by those who attended.
